Crassula Bonsai

The Crassula Bonsai, Jade or money tree as it is commonly known is a native succulent of Africa, predominantly found in South Africa. The plant variety can grow up to 3 meters if left to its own devises and produces a lovely bloom of flowers during winter. It’s an extremely hardy plant, easy to grow, loves indoors and hence draws similarities with the ficus ginseng variety of bonsai that this website draws its name. Like the ficus ginseng it is commonly found indoors in homes around the world.

In fact we have one such Crassula Bonsai in our backyard which flourished so much that we re-planted it straight into the earth, it’s now upwards of a meter tall, has a very thick trunk and large evergreen oval leaves. Its quite a remarkable plant for that reason that it has grown so rapidly, with almost no care. Indoors though as a bonsai the plant will thrive as the warmth of most homes mimic the arid climate’s of Africa.

Caring for your Crassula Bonsai  is not difficult as it does not need a consistent watering, the plant will thrive regardless and the succulent leaves will retain fluid and moisture all year round. During summer it would be ideal to leave the plant outdoors as it generally prefers warmth over the cooler months of winter.

Re-potting is not necessary, however doing so every 3-5 years wouldn’t hurt. It likes fast draining soil, a mix of small pebbles, sand and soil should do the trick. Some people will tell you to fertilize your Crassula Bonsai, however its probably not super necessary, after all, the reason for buying your crassula bonsai was to essentially set and forget.

Wiring your bonsai isn’t necessary and most people don’t, merely pruning the Crassula Bonsai to the desired shape should suffice and create a lovely addition to your home.
